While the Cleantech Park is under construction in Georgetown, academic programs related to cleantech are up and running, attracting the next generation of cleantech students.

Allison Doughart oversees operations for the Sustainable Business Leadership Post Graduate Certificate program at Holland College.

“It's our hope that graduates can work in a variety of industries that support businesses goals through impactful and socially conscious ways, while helping make data driven decisions.”

She works closely UPEI and the Government of PEI to get the program up and running, with classes eventually moving to the Cleantech Park in Georgetown.

The PEI Government recently announced scholarships for students wanting to get involved in cleantech education. Over $100,000 was invested into Holland College and UPEI to help fund the awards.

Doughart believes future graduates can help support local businesses and also help PEI improve its carbon footprint.

“Our graduates bring a diverse toolkit and sustainability skills to add value to those local businesses. They’re going to be trained in sustainable supply chain management, corporate due diligence and environmental compliance. And they'll also develop strong skills and stakeholder engagement,” said Doughart.

“These skills are going to enable them to help organizations reduce risk, innovate and align with regulatory requirements and community expectations. Those strategies will make businesses more resilient and competitive.”

As for her hopes for the future, Doughart said the Cleantech Academy and its programs will be a hub for like-minded students and businesses. At the same time, she thinks having these programs and scholarships will address an existing skill gap.

“The World Economic Forum forecasts that in 2025 that climate change adaptation alone is going to generate 5 million new jobs by 2030. The other mitigation contributions are going to bring in 3 million. Roles such as sustainability specialists and environmental engineers are among some of the fastest growing positions,” she said.

“It'll be an opportunity for our students to gain experience and to gain valuable partnerships of local businesses and experts to contribute to the student experience.”
